Dan King Claims Medals in National Shooting Competitions

Year 11 student Dan has had a busy few weeks and competed in national competitions in early September. Despite being disappointed with his performance in the final of The British Open, Dan came away with prize money and two medals to round off a busy summer.

This is a great achievement and we look forward to hearing about how he gets on in his next competition.

Lily Cook in England Golf Squad Trials

For the second year running, Year 11 student, Lily Cook, has been invited to trial for the England Golf squad. Lily has trained regularly since lockdown restrictions were lifted and has spent most of her summer at The Cave Hotel & Golf Resort at Boughton. For any aspiring golfers contemplating Sixth Form choices, we run a golf academy training programme for students keen on the game. This includes regular coaching from PGA trained coaches and access to the two excellent courses at Boughton Golf Club. Please contact Phil Relf on prelf@canterbury.kent.sch.uk if you are interested in applying.

Recognition for Oliver Scott

Year 8 student, Oliver Scott, received significant recognition from his athletics club in their end of season awards. East Kent Invicta Athletics Club presented Oliver with an award that recognized his outstanding commitment to his running. Oliver has worked extremely hard on his running and will be competing in major events regularly over the winter. Our after-school athletics training takes place on Wednesdays after school and is open to all students. The sessions are an excellent way of working on fitness and athletics skills.

Cricket Progress

Our group of cricketers have been very busy over the summer with all of them playing regularly for their club, district and even county. We were able to play some school fixtures right at the end of the summer term and we had three good wins against The Langton.

There were several excellent performances over the summer from our students. Year 14 student, Bradley Goldsack, scored 77 for Kent’s academy against Essex in a T20 game at Chelmsford. Year 11 student, Will Cook, was selected for a Kent under 17 side. Jaydn Denly scored his maiden hundred for Whitstable Cricket Club. Freddie Fulton, Henry Goss, Josh Julian, Harry Fulton and Jaydn Denly all played for Kent and Emile Haratbar, Adam Jacob, Dylan Rutherford and Harry Beer all did very well for The Eastern Vikings. Several of our students will be having Kent trials this month. Our new intake at Sixth Form level have started well and year 12 student, Josh Baker, scored a hundred and took five wickets for St. Lawrence & Highland Court 2nd XI in early September. We have also gained several committed players in Year 7 so the future looks bright for our cricket.

Sixth Form Sport Induction day

Over 100 students attended our annual sports induction day on Wednesday 2nd September. Our range of sport academies now includes athletics, basketball, cricket, cheerleading, football, golf, rugby and triathlon. On induction day, our students attended workshops on lifestyle management, nutrition and recovery strategies. We have recently appointed Tony Kesisoglou as our full time Sport Science Lead. Tony’s role will encompass work across The Canterbury Academy Trust as we look to develop the physical activity support for all of our students.

Our Sixth Form Sport induction day complemented the rigorous pre-season training undertaken by both the football and basketball academies. Students and staff have been in regularly over the summer building up to when fixtures eventually resume.
